We believe that through the teaching of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Education) and Citizenship, that our pupils become healthy, independent and responsible members of society, who understand about their rights and responsibilities as an individual and show empathy and understanding to others. It develops their sense of self-worth by encouraging them to play a positive role in school life and the wider community.
The PSHE education programme of study are organised into three core themes:
- Health and wellbeing
- Living in the wider world (covering economic wellbeing and careers)
These themes include various topics related to physical and mental health, alcohol and drug education, relationships (and sex) education, economic wellbeing and careers.
At Watchlytes we use a whole-school approach to build these essential foundations – crucial for children to achieve their best, academically and socially.
Creating a safe learning environment
Within each class, teachers organise lessons that deal with potentially sensitive subjects by creating a safe and secure learning environment. This helps our children feel confident to share their ideas, values and attitudes without fear of negative feedback from peers. This safe learning environment with clear boundaries also helps teachers to manage discussions on sensitive issues with greater confidence.
We deliver Sex Education that ensures that both boys and girls are prepared for the changes adolescence brings and (drawing on the knowledge of the human life cycle set out in the National Curriculum for Science) how a baby is conceived and born. Health Education will cover the key facts about puberty and the changing adolescent body.
At Watchlytes, we have always taught a curriculum which prepares our children for changes to their bodies and how babies are conceived. The lessons we teach are always age appropriate and as well as our PSHE lessons, these lessons are taught within a safe learning environment in a sensitive manner.

- Develop pupils' knowledge and understanding of global challenges such as poverty, inequality and sustainability.
- Understand some basic principles of finances.
- Experience the process of democracy through participation in the School Council.
